For a team that didn’t face much adversity during their remarkable run through the regular season, the final game of the playoffs certainly made up for it.

The North Kildonan 13A2 Cobras trailed the St. Boniface Seals 1-0 late in game three of the city championship final on Tuesday. A loss would not only extend the series but also snap the Cobras’ impressive 20-game win streak. The team was the top seed heading into the playoffs, having qualified with a 19-2-1 record.

But North Kildonan wouldn’t have any of it. The Cobras scored the equalizer in the final minutes of the third period to force overtime. The drama was just beginning.

“Given the situation, I would be lying if I said my team was not nervous about going into overtime,” Cobras head coach Rob Schrofel said. “Our confidence though was growing late in the game.”

A power play in the extra frame only added to North Kilodnan’s assurance. With the Cobras pressuring on the man advantage, Hayden Piche fired a shot from near the blueline. Jack Champagne had just positioned himself in the slot to screen St. Boniface’s goalie and ended up deflecting the puck into the net for the game-winning goal. The Cobras had captured the city minor bantam title, sweeping the Seals with a 2-1 overtime victory.

“The boys flooded onto the ice, waving their arms and hugging their teammates,” Schrofel said. “It was an awesome sight to see.”

A spectacle that rivals Schrofel’s highlight of the season – watching his team grow.

“The boys all bought in to our philosophy of work hard, play your position well and have fun doing it," Schrofel said. "Winning the city championship was just an added bonus.”
